Frost Tonight, by Ostapenko Studio · Effective 31 August 2026

Frost Tonight is a simple app: it watches the overnight forecast for your place and warns you the evening before frost is likely. It was built to collect as little data as possible. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no analytics trackers, and we operate no servers — nothing you do in the app is sent to us.

Location

With your permission, the app reads your device’s approximate (coarse) location. Your coordinates are sent directly from your device to WeatherAPI.com, a weather data service, for the sole purpose of fetching the forecast data (overnight temperature, dew point, wind, cloud cover) used to assess frost risk for your area. The app does no reverse geocoding: the name shown against a place is simply the name you type for it, and it never leaves your device. We never receive, store, or log your location, and the app does not track your movements. You can skip location access entirely and enter coordinates by hand.

Notifications

Frost alerts are computed and scheduled on your device. The app periodically refreshes the forecast in the background — again directly from WeatherAPI.com — and schedules a local notification for evenings when frost is likely. No notification service of ours is involved, because we don’t have one.

Data stored on your device

Your settings (alert preferences and whether you have purchased Remove Ads) and the most recent forecast are stored locally on your device only, so the app opens instantly. Deleting the app deletes this data.

Advertising

The free version of the app shows a single banner ad served by Google AdMob, and the app asks Google for limited ads on every request, in every country. Limited ads are served without using a local advertising identifier to build a profile of you: Google is told, before its software starts, that it has no consent to store or read identifiers on your device for advertising. Ads are never personalised, and we never ask to track you — the app does not request App Tracking Transparency permission on iPhone or iPad, and it shows no advertising consent form anywhere, because there is no personalisation to consent to.

To serve and count ads at all, Google may still process limited technical information such as your IP address and device identifiers, and may store data used solely to detect invalid traffic and fraud — storage we treat as strictly necessary to deliver an ad, rather than as something requiring your consent. That is described in Google’s Privacy Policy and How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services. Purchasing Remove Ads removes advertising — and Google’s involvement with it — entirely.

Purchases

The one-time Remove Ads purchase is processed entirely by Apple’s App Store or Google Play. We never see your name, payment details, or billing information.

Children

The app is suitable for general audiences and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13 (or the equivalent age in your country). The app has no accounts, no profiles and no user-to-user features. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, contact us and we will act on it — though, as above, we hold none.

Who is responsible

The data controller for this app is Ostapenko Studio, a trading name of I Ostapenko & Y Ostapenko (ABN 18 901 484 459), Australia, reachable at support@ostapenko.studio. We have not appointed a data protection officer, because the scale and nature of our processing does not require one. Google and WeatherAPI.com act as independent controllers for the data they receive directly from your device, under their own privacy policies.

Why we may process data, and for how long

Where the UK or EU General Data Protection Regulation applies:

We operate no servers and keep no retention schedule, because we hold nothing to retain. Data on your device lasts until you clear it or delete the app. What Google and WeatherAPI.com retain is governed by their own policies.

International transfers

We are based in Australia. Because we receive no personal information, there is no transfer to us. Requests your device makes to WeatherAPI.com and to Google may be handled outside your country, including in the United States, under those companies’ own transfer arrangements — for the EEA and UK, Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EU–US and UK–US Data Privacy Framework.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal information, to withdraw consent, and to data portability. Because we collect and hold no personal information about you, there is usually nothing for us to access, correct or delete — but if you have a question or concern we genuinely want to hear it, and we will respond within 30 days. To exercise rights over data held by Google or WeatherAPI.com, contact them directly.

If you are not satisfied with our response you may complain to your regulator:

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date. Material changes will be noted in the app’s release notes.
